Wrong kidney removed at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City

A 76-year-old male patient who was undergoing dialysis treatment for his failed and diseased kidneys underwent surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City to remove the more severely diseased kidney.

His surgeon, who had treated him during his bout with bladder cancer, removed the wrong kidney and has been relieved of his clinical and administrative duties according to the hospital’s spokeswoman, Dorie Klissas.

Upon recognizing the error, doctors removed his other kidney. According to the spokeswoman, the patient is doing well and the hospital has apologized to the patient. The hospital declined to name the New York surgeon citing the hospital’s policy to not comment on personnel issues.
