Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit – Lawyer Long Island

Transvaginal mesh surgery creates serious health complications

Every day women are suffering a silent battle that they may feel embarrassed or ashamed to admit they are struggling. Perhaps you have seen the commercials, those warning viewers of the potential hazards transvaginal mesh surgery poses for those who have chosen to undergo these procedures. Lawsuits have been filed, the FDA has made their warnings and studies continue to prove with each year that passes that transvaginal mesh poses more consequences and hazards than benefits to those who undergo surgery.

What is transvaginal mesh and what is it used to correct?

Transvaginal mesh is a synthetic piece of netting or fine wire that is placed through the vagina to correct medical issues that cause a weakening of the tissues that support the pelvic organs. Conditions that are corrected through use of transvaginal mesh include pelvic organ prolapse or urinary incontinence. Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the tissues that hold the pelvic organs in place such as the bladder, uterus and rectum become weakened or stretched.  Urinary incontinence occurs when the bladder leaks urine during any form of physical activity.

Why do surgeons use transvaginal mesh?

Many surgeons have opted to correct such medical conditions through use of transvaginal mesh because it can be effectively implanted through the vagina to help strengthen the muscles within the pelvis without the use of any incision. Transvaginal mesh would help to fortify the walls of the vaginal and give proper support to all pelvic organs.

What are the complications associated with transvaginal mesh?

The Food and Drug Administration has been investigating thousands of reports indicating complications linked to the use of transvaginal mesh.  In 2008, the FDA made their initial warning in reference to the use of transvaginal mesh. Between the years 2008 and 2011, three thousands reports were made against the use of transvaginal mesh. In 2011, the FDA stated that the complications associated with the use of transvaginal  mesh were “not rare” and that the use of a mesh device “may expose patients to greater risk.”  In addition, the FDA also found that once the mesh is implanted, it often shrinks or contracts creating many of the health issues involved in these reports. Such complications include bleeding, pain during intercourse, vaginal scarring, severe infections at the site of implantation, erosion of the vaginal wall, urinary incontinence and recurrence of prolapse/ incontinence. In some cases, women were required to undergo additional surgeries to correct complications or reverse the implantation of the mesh.

What can one do if they have fallen victim to the side effects of transvaginal mesh surgery?

For many women, the effects of transvaginal mesh surgery have created serious health complications that will continue to impair their ability to enjoy daily life activities such as walking, sitting and intercourse. In addition the emotional distress and psychological side effects associated with these health complications can also impair a woman’s ability to enjoy their life.
